2010 – New Collection of Essays Reveals Art’s Impact on Australian Author

House of Pictures

is released by author Elizabeth Bernays

Art has always played a role in the human experience. House of Pictures by author Elizabeth Bernays, takes a personal view of the significance of art through her series of essays, each of which relates to a specific painting in the author’s Arizona home. The theme that rings out through the essays is the meaning of home. What and where is home for so many in the world who move and settle in difference places?

The book, which includes 26 fascinating essays, begins with a description of the author’s home, built in 1941. Its setting allows Bernays to observe the desert. “A House in the Desert” tells how each picture in her home provides an “emotional experience,” whether it’s a painting of a canal in Amsterdam or a cloth picture made by tribal women in Brazil. Photos on the author’s Web site, elizabethbernays.com, further highlight the reader’s experience. “Of Crows and Conquerors,” which took first place in the Brainerd essay competition, tells of Ramingining, a remote village in the author’s native Australia. Although the small village has few amenities, it boasts an arts center, and the work that emerges causes the author to wonder, “Can art provide a means of undermining still-present prejudices?”

Elizabeth Bernays, who grew up in Australia, has an MFA in creative writing and publishes in a variety of literary journals. She has won several awards, including the 2007 X.J. Kennedy nonfiction prize for “Flying with Lepidoptera.”

This book is a personal view of the significance of art using a series of essays, each relating to a particular painting in the author’s Arizona home. The pictures engender elements of love and science, work and travel, loss and leisure, but the consistent theme throughout the book is the meaning of home - what and where is home for so many in the world who move and settle in different places? Finally, what is art for, and how do pictures become an integral part of a home?
